(Updated Oct 2022)

Magdalene Boat Club is the the largest society in College and gives a chance for everyone to learn, train and compete in the sport often most closely associated with Cambridge - rowing!

If you have never rowed before, the first term is spent under the watchful guidance of the Lower Boats Captains who will teach the basics of rowing and put crews together for the many novice races throughout term before you join the senior crews later on in the year. On top of the training, MBC has a packed social calendar with events mingling the whole spectrum of College members together for guaranteed fun and great stories to tell in the future.

Training schedules vary and you can decide how much time you want to put in, and also depend on the time of year due to light restrictions. You can choose from anywhere between 3 to 12/13 sessions a week for those who just fancy learning a new sport to those who have really caught the bug for rowing.

Members pay £39 per term subs which are charged to your College bill so there's no need to worry about costs straight away. This helps fund coaching, equipment, race entries, repairs and maintenance of one of the best equipped boathouses on the river with a full set of 8 rowing machines, showers, changing rooms and of course the boats!

We play one match every week against varying oppositions, Usually on a Saturday morning pre-brunch. The matches will last just over half an hour. We've seen it all; from rugby teams posing in skirts, to male referees who really know more about the game than they should do.

Absolutely no skill or level of fitness is required, merely a hangover from the previous night and some funky fancy dress :)

Swaps, stash* and sweets in abundance. Definitely the 10am solution to any hangover, Coming to a netball court near you!

*ahem... will be ordered...

After "extensive" research, it has proven more beneficial than neurofen for post-bop cures

+ Peckard Society (History Society)

  • Stan Hinton

+ Rugby Club

  • Jamie Lamb

We may not be the best rugby team out there but by God do we have a lot of heart - last season we won the Cuppers Boot which is basically like winning the World Cup but better because you can drink Wherry by the shoe.

Magdalene’s rugby team is steeped in history and is one of the college’s biggest and most established sides. In the past it has included a great many international players, fielding an entire back line of internationally capped players in the early nineties, and two Scotland captains and British Lions players in Gavin Hastings (one of the greatest players of all time) and Rob Wainwright. There is, however, no need to be intimidated by the illustrious past of the club. Our team is inclusive, welcoming those who have never made a tackle in their lives just as warmly as experienced players. We currently play on Sunday afternoons and are lucky enough to have our pitches a mere ten minute walk from college.

Our activities as a club are not confined to the pitch, it must be confessed. Old Boys fixtures, club barbecues, rugby dinners and many other social events provide the opportunity to get involved in a friendly group that spans across all years in college. Magdalene-Magdalen is our annual fixture with our sister college Magdalen Oxford. Every year we compete for the Spanish cup and the fixture alternates between Oxford and Cambridge. The fixture is followed by a boat race in the bar and a swap where we get the chance to prove that Cambridge comes above Oxford in drinking as well as sporting and academic excellence. The Pickerel Inn is our official HQ, a location where many winning game plans have been devised.
